Freeman finds end zone

Royce Freeman scores on a 2-yard touchdown run to give Team Free a 21-3 lead in the third quarter.

First-half impressions

The offense hasn’t looked good in general, and the defense has looked inspired, particularly the defensive backs.

Billy Gibson and Arrion Springs have interceptions, and that’s a good sign for the defense.

However, it can be difficult to tell in Spring Games whether it’s more the fault of the offense, rather than stellar play by the defense. I remain skeptical at how much improved this defense will be this season.

Justin Herbert is really establishing himself as the starter at quarterback. He has completed 12 of 20 passes for 189 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Travis Jonsen and Braxton Burmeister are 6 of 16 combined for 110 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions (one each). And Taylor Alie played one series, and he fumbled the ball away.

Halftime

Team Free leads Team Brave 14-3 at halftime.

Adam Stack misses FG

Adam Stack misses a 39-yard field goal attempt.

Another touchdown for Herbert

Justin Herbert connected with Darren Carrington for a 30-yard touchdown, the second scoring connection for them today. Team Free leads 14-3.

Alie fumbles

Shortly after entering the game, quarterback Taylor Alie fumbled and lost the ball.

Taylor Alie at quarterback

Taylor Alie comes in at quarterback for Team Free, giving Justin Herbert a break. Alie, a senior quarterback, is actually listed as a wide receiver for this game and has taken reps at WR during the spring.

Two interceptions

Billy Gibson intercepted Braxton Burmeister, and now Arrion Springs has intercepted Travis Jonsen.

Brooks-James returns

Tony Brooks-James is back in the game after taking a hard hit from Arrion Springs.

Tony Brooks-James injured

Running back Tony Brooks-James took a hard hit from Arrion Springs while breaking up a pass. He was on the ground for awhile, but eventually got up and walked off the field under his own power.

Burmeister makes appearance

Braxton Burmeister, a four-star recruit this year, is now in at quarterback for Team Brave.

Just three quarterbacks

Just a reminder that Oregon has just three quarterbacks on the Spring Game roster today — Justin Herbert for Team Free, and Travis Jonsen and Braxton Burmeister for Team Brave.

Terry Wilson left the program this spring, and Taylor Alie is listed as a wide receiver today.

Team Brave on the board

Zach Emerson kicks a 36-yard field goal to put Team Brave on the board. Team Free leads 7-3 in the first quarter.

Jonsen’s drive stalled

For Team Brave, Travis Jonsen completed 1 of 2 passes for 19 yards.

Tony Brooks-James caught that pass for 19 yards, and he had 9 yards on four carries on the drive, which ended in a punt.

Herbert’s numbers early

Justin Herbert was 5 of 7 for 70 yards and a touchdown on the opening drive.

There was one fumbled snap, but he recovered well and threw for a first down.

Herbert strikes first

Justin Herbert of Team Free connected with Darren Carrington for a 13-yard touchdown pass.

Nice start for Herbert, who is trying to hold onto his starting job at quarterback.

Crowd size

Decent crowd here, but not overwhelmingly big.

Nice flyover and flag presentation before the game to honor America’s service men and women.

New era

With today’s Oregon Ducks football Spring Game, which is set to start at 11 a.m., fans at Autzen Stadium get to usher in the Willie Taggart era.

Taggart was hired to replace the fired head coach Mark Helfrich after the Ducks finished 4-8 last season.
